Grieving the Loss of a Spouse

Case Study Details

Client:

Female, 58 years old

Start Date:

13 June, 2024

Case:

Bereavement & Loss

Total Duration

05 Month

The client’s husband passed away suddenly from a heart attack. They had been married for over 30 years. She reported difficulty functioning day-to-day, frequent crying spells, and described feeling “like a part of me died with him.” She was also experiencing trouble sleeping and isolating from friends and family..

Therapeutic approach

Used a Grief Counseling approach with elements of Complicated Grief Therapy (CGT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Early sessions focused on creating a safe space to express grief. Later work included memory work, journaling, and discussing how to honor the spouse’s memory while continuing her life.

Progress and outcome

After 5 months, the client began re-engaging with her social circle and resumed her volunteer work. While grief remained, it became less overwhelming. She described learning to “carry the loss with love, not just pain.” Sleep and mood improved with mindfulness and routine-setting.
